Paul de Jong and Nick Zammuto started working together in Inwood, on the northern tip of Manhattan, in 2000. Since forming the Books, they have independently produced three critically acclaimed albums of music (Thought for Food, 2002, The Lemon of Pink, 2003, and Lost and Safe, 2005), put together a live show (and toured extensively in 2006 and 2007), released a DVD of videos (Playall, 2007), and composed four tracks for the Ministry of Culture's elevator in Paris, France, among other pursuits. They do all of their own sample collecting, composing, writing, recording, mixing, and mastering in their home studios, with no producers, engineers, or sweetening in between.
