Boy In Static is the musical guise of 25-year-old Alexander Chen, now residing in Boston. Growing up in New Jersey, Chen began making music at an early age on viola, sequencers, and the family's upright piano. His recording career began when a three-song demo made its way overseas to Markus and Micha Acher of The Notwist. After an exchange of emails, the two sides met and discussed harmoniums, the demo, and the band's new label Alien Transistor, which released Boy in Static's debut Newborn in 2004. The following year, Chen formed a live band to introduce Boy In Static to audiences worldwide. They supported 13 & God on their US and European tours.
Chen is also involved in art exploring interactivity and sound. From 2001 to 2005, his hybrid pieces combining illustration and programming were shown in galleries in Milan, New York, Rotterdam, and Barcelona's Sonar Festival. 2002's Sonata For The Unaware , a piece which used video footage of Philadelphia commuters to generate music, earned recognition and awards from publications including The Guardian.
